Why is my computer failing ro read USB mass storage devices but can read any other USB devices?
My computer is acting a bit strange, if i plug in any USB flash disk it simply says disk not formatted but if i take the same disk to any other machine it works perfectly well. i have tried all the USB ports on the machine it just the same. If i plug any other USB devices like my bluetooth dongle or my wireless modem they work perfectly fine.
The machine is an MSI K8MM-V mainboard running with an AMD sepron processor. My OS is windows XP SP3. Does anybody have an idea what could be happening?
Could be an issue with one of the drivers in your USB controllers such as the root hub, etc. I’ve seen it happen that while the ports would work fine for some functions, others wouldn’t work well. I’d recommend going into device manager and having the computer try to update all the drivers for any devices showing under universal serial bus controllers, doing this one by one. Yes, it will take a little time, but could be a relatively simple fix. I have seen this fix small issues like this since the portion of the driver that was corrupted didn’t affect all functions of the ports, only certain functions like in your case.
If that doesn’t work, maybe uninstalling those devices and allowing windows to reinstall them after a reboot could correct it as well.
Windows, well it has improved the ability to detect issues with drivers, still does not detect all issues. There are many times where the device will show as operating fine and there is no exclamation mark by it, yet it still will have problems.
