Though compliance with specific standards wasn’t cited, Quaduro says the Quadpad E84 withstands “harsh environments,” thanks to its aluminum case. Durability is also said to be enhanced by the device’s use of solid-state storage instead of a hard disk drive.Windows XP Embedded is installed on an 8GB flash drive which, since it is mounted in a CompactFlash slot, may be upgraded after purchase.

The 8.4-inch touchscreen display is tuned for sunlight readability, with a brightness rating up to 300 nits and a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, according to the company. When not on the move, the Quadpad E84 may be connected to an external screen, since it has a standard VGA port.

Processing power is provided by a 1.0GHz Intel Celeron M processor, along with 1GB of RAM. Quaduro says the Quadpad E84 uses Intel’s 852GM chipset, which includes the 852GMCH memory controller hub and ICH4 I/O controller hub. This chipset offers integrated graphics capabilities, but they have apparently been augmented on the Quadpad, since the device’s data sheet cites “Nvidia 64MB” graphics, without further explanation.

The Quadpad E84′s other I/O capabilities are made clear by a manufacturer-supplied diagram, above. As shown, the device offers 10/100 Ethernet with an RJ45 connector, two USB 2.0 ports, headphone and microphone jacks, and a connector for an optional docking station. Not visible, but also on board, are 802.11b/g and Bluetooth networking.

Expansion is possible via the CardBus-compatible PCMCIA Type II slot and an SD card reader. Other notable features are the device’s six programmable function keys, fingerprint sensor, scroll wheel, and a camera with unspecified resolution.

The Quadpad weighs 2.6 pounds with a three-cell battery, claimed good for up to three hours of operation. A larger battery that extends operation up to five hours is also available, the company says.

In addition to Windows XP Embedded, the Quadpad E84 can run Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional, according to Quaduro. Pricing and availability were not cited, but the device appears to be on sale now.
